would this work? surley the 12V + won't connect back to the battery if the starter relay isn't engaged/

It sounds like a fair price for that amount work to me, whether it's worth spending it on your particular car only you can decide.

According to the 'how many left' site there were only 56 new registrations in 2003 (across the six models they list, including 2 millenniums) although this will include any 52 plates registered in Jan/Feb

I would have thought it was more of a 'bad driving habit' because you don't have both hands on the wheel rather than any damage you might do to the gear selector?

just a thought... You've mentioned both you and your girlfrind have sore necks and you having a sore back, your insurer might have been expecting the damage to be more sever if the impact was hard enough to cause you both injury, that may be why they first said they would expect it to be written off...
