Puma fails to start (but will turn over fine)

Interesting... Might try that too! It started fine yesterday, twice. When it doesn't start it's almost as if it has no fuel. Like there are air bubbles in the line or something.

Puma fails to start (but will turn over fine)

Yeah I always wait for it to prime (I assume that process completes when the pump turns off?) as you saw I also tried priming it a few times but I doubt that makes any difference as the pump only primes until the required pressure is reached AFAIK... Will update this thread the next time I...

Dashboard bulbs & ABS - pictures requested! Broken bulbs?

Thanks for the info. Is there a fuse or something I can look for to see if it's been pulled (either for the ABS or the dash lights)? Actually never mind, think this post here covers it! I used the dash bulb test on Puma (holding down the trip reset button, turning the key, etc) and while the...

Puma fails to start (but will turn over fine)

Hi! Thanks for the suggestion. Yeah I heard about crank position sensors... not sure how to test for that (unplug it, I suppose). Once running, does it work OK with a faulty CPS? Valve sticking is a possibility! It doesn't sound abnormal though - it's not ratchety or clacking in any way, just...

Dashboard bulbs & ABS - pictures requested! Broken bulbs?

Does anyone have a picture of what warning lights are lit up during key turn & starting on a 2001 Puma with digital dash? Or a video, better yet? Just want to see what your dashboard looks like to compare to mine! I'm trying to figure out if some of my bulbs are broken (and by extension if my...

Cylinders not firing at low RPM - driving me mental!

Hi! I should have updated this thread!! Mine was also the coil pack. I changed the HT leads as well, just because. I changed the rocker cover gasket, pulled out and cleaned the plugs and their sockets in the head (filthy and oily), cleaned a lot of the engine up actually, and replaced the coil...

    Puma Revving

Voice of scepticism here - not all dynos are trustworthy :P I want to believe you though, my exhaust is falling to bits at the rear and I'm looking for an excuse to, uh... upgrade. And what a lovely sound! Hard to tell from the video, but is it tangibly louder than the stock exhaust, or is it...

Puma fails to start (but will turn over fine)

Just wondering, seen plenty of threads about completely dead Pumas but little about them appearing not to fire up when turning over! :D Mine's done this before on rare occasions, months in between, but it's done it twice in the last two weeks... Took me several minutes to get it started this...

    Air Conditioning

Do check the power wire for the compressor clutch as well - on mine, it turned out the wire was the culprit. The clue was in the engine RPM. At idle, if I pressed the air con button, at roughly the time you'd expect the compressor to engage, the engine RPM would rise slightly (very...

    Electric Supercharger idea

Blowers have been tried before - there were small improvements but of course those are rather unwieldy things to cram into your engine bay. Apparently Audi are working on this exact sort of thing (electric turbocharging) with excellent results...

Anyone no which wires are for temperature on the maf?

Don't do it, man. All it does is trick your car into thinking the air is colder than it really is. This makes the ECU over-fuel your engine. This does not really increase power (in fact, it may decrease it). The car consumes more fuel (and wastes it, obviously, seeing as there is little/no...

    Electric Supercharger idea

Thank you! There is a counterpoint to my own post, which I would like to add as well. If you weren't after massive gains but perhaps just a small improvement in performance (and we are talking small, if it works at all), I think there are a few less-insane options that could be explored...

    Electric Supercharger idea

Well... it wouldn't not work, it would just be extremely unpractical to achieve. A supercharger robs your engine of a lot of power to do it's job. They are nothing like these eBay fans which people are trying to clip on to their air intakes. They are extremely powerful high-pressure air-forcing...

    increase BHP on a 1.7

I would go for black unless you've got an uprated clutch, the power gains from green hoses will wreck the stock clutch very quickly. :P

    So many problems!

On the subject of the blowing-hot air problem: If the HCV has been replaced it's time to check the HCP (heater control panel). Your HCV might be faulty if it's a cheap part but we may as well do this check too (it's free, all it costs is time!). The HCP is the panel in your dashboard with the...

Air con - compressor clutch not engaging, maybe?

Mine was jerking before... now, not so much, it's much smoother, but you can still feel a subtle change in the output power of the car when it's cycling. There's probably something else wrong on mine now though so don't take my word for it

Air con - compressor clutch not engaging, maybe?

It's working again! Which is just as well because I would've died trying to drive home in the heat today :D I found the culprit when planning to test the compressor clutch. This would necessitate removing the clutch power cable, but when I went to do that (which required actually...

Air con - compressor clutch not engaging, maybe?

Cool, thanks for the advice! Maybe there is a bigger problem here then, I'm fairly sure my AC will not run if the heater isn't set to cold. The compressor will turn off after a few seconds if the air coming out the vents isn't set to cold (when it was working, anyway).

Air con - compressor clutch not engaging, maybe?

Thanks for the suggestions. Crap, a lot to do then. I thought if the pressure was low it would engage the compressor, run for approx a few seconds, then switch off? Is that not the case? I base this assumption on what it did with the heater control valve (I had an HCV stuck to hot once - and...

Air con - compressor clutch not engaging, maybe?

Christ, I'm having so many problems with this car :D anyway yeah, my air con was dead today and I was dying myself, driving around without it. Need help! Symptoms: heater set to cold, fan on, press air con, button lights up, engine RPM increases slightly (!!) but compressor doesn't appear to...
