Changing Cambelt, Crankshaft Stretch Bolt Query

Using Gates Cambelt Kit KO35433XS, my mechanic says there is a discrepancy between old removed crankshaft bolt which has threaded portion 36mm long compared to the new bolt from kit which is only threaded for 28mm and he is reluctant to go ahead and use. Has anyone else had a similar problem and how was it resolved ? Any advice gratefully received as the Puma is my "Daily" and is off the road.
