Hi everyone,

I have been a fan of pumas for a while now and especially the Racing Puma. Although the prices for the Racing Pumas are quite high at the moment at around £5-6k. I could afford one but I know that I would not be particularly happy with the power level. So my alternative is to purchase a 2000-2002 Ford Puma 1.7 16v and tune it somewhere between 200-300hp, along with other bits such as a FRP body kit. The reason why my goal is a broad estimate is due to lack of experience with Puma's that are running 200+hp. I hope that 220hp is plently and provides an entertaing yet driveable package, yet I am aware that 300hp will certainly fufil my desires! :grin:

Now, I have searched on the net and haven't really found that much info regarding the requirements and limitations of this build. For instance, how much hp can the 1.7s take on standard internals along with their gearboxes? So far this is what I have found regarding a 'tuning guide' http://www.lightningmotorsport.co.uk/tuningkits.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;. The 200-200hp package doesnt seem that bad in terms of price however the 270 package does seem a bit steep. I have heard that you can install a 2.0 or 2.3 Duratec engine where there are more options available and at a cheper rate. How would one go about buying one of these? Will it still need to be forged to cope with circa 300hp?
Finally, I saw this vid: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=GsEBz7O65b8" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; and I wondered whether I could carry out the same procedure and fit a Focus RS (MK1?) engine. I do not know the prices of a complete engine and there capabilities with standard internals so if anyone does know could they shed some knowledge.

I understand that there are various brake packages that you can install from other models so this area is not within my concern. However, to what degree would the suspension need upgrading? Would lowering springs, bushes, and braces be enough or will other parts need to be purchased in order to make the car handle the extra power?

Sorry for all the questions, I am new to the modding scene for Puma's but I have noticed a fair few builds which have caught my attention hence the drive to want to learn more :).

Kind Regards,

Puma555.

Should be having a GOOD browse through this site. All the infos you are looking for are already there….

Some examples. Erroll's mighty puma: http://www.projectpuma.com/viewtopic.php?f=64&t=10961" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
The original one taking the 1.7 engine to (and beyond) it's limits: http://www.projectpuma.com/viewtopic.php?f=64&t=6583" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Moondastka's Puma RS with FRS engine in it (tuned, of course): http://www.projectpuma.com/viewtopic.php?f=64&t=16847&hilit=FRS" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

That will probably do to get you going?

Thanks for that. Do you think the prices from Lightning Motorsport are fair or could the parts be sourced for much less?

How much HP can the 1.7 gearbox handle as well as the Racing Puma? Will I neeed to spend thousands on gear sets afterwards or are there boxes from other models that can handle circa 300hp?

EDIT: Is that a 2.0 Ford RS engine in Moondastka's?

Kind Regards,

I can't comment on prices since I don't live in UK. Have a read through budget turbo project by Pumanoob. There you will find his quest for a suitable clutch first. The gearbox itself is the weakest link in your plans; that is why Pumanoob in his other poject (the Duratec one) had to switch to MTX75 gearbox….

Yes, it is Focus RS engine in the black puma, hence the thread is called Puma RS...

I looked up at that gearbox and it said that it can only cope within 150-200hp according to this: http://www.sico-developments.co.uk/products/mk6-fiesta-st-mtx75-gearbox-conversion" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
So does that mean that if I was to aim for around 220hp then this gearbox will be at its limits and will not be able to cope with 300hp/lbft in the future?

So can MTX75 handle well over the guided 200hp? As I wouldnt want to replace my box with one that will just about handle the power and run the risk of it going.

Are the gearboxes from a MK1 Focus RS stronger than other MTX75's?

Kind Regards,

Ask around a bit. I think everyone will tel you that MTX75 is pretty much indestructable. Erroll has it in his monster puma with 450 bhp, so I'd say it is strong enough

Thats good to hear! :grin: How much would one cost and what models have them? Would I need a different diff, if so which one?

Kind Regards,
