hi, please help.
bought my 2nd puma the other day as a project. its a 1999 1.7 with lux pack.
when i first started it, it was idleing erractically so came here found the tut on cleaning the icv.
did that, did the plugs at the same time ( quite carbonised i might add ) and also cleaned the maf.
before doing the above, i dissconected the battery as it had gone flat due to the bad weather and lack of use ( stood for 8 days in the snow ) as i said its a bit of a project not my main car.
charged the battery overnight, replaced plugs, icv and maf.
connected all ht leads and connectors to maf and icv.
connected the battery and nothing, no dash lights, tried hazzard switch for signs of life, not a bean.
the only sound was a ticking from the abs module.
all fuses have been checked and all are fine ( under bonnet and in car )
took battery back off connected it to my charger and the warning for check polarity came up as if - was on + and vice versa, but they were correct.
when switched around though the warning goes off on my charger.
also very strange is that i checked to see if was holding a charge with my volt meter and it came up with minus 11.5 volts.
terms were on correct battery posts although when reversed minus on positive post and vice versa i got a positve reading of 11.5 volts.
also the battery got quite hot when reconnected to the car.
has anyone ever heard of a battery reversing polarity for no reason/on its own ?
also any/all suggestions would be welcome.
i am no stranger to car repair, quite capable i.e. cambelt changes, head rebuilds, all servicing done myself so feel free for techno bable i should be ok !
thanks in advance and hope for some replies.
also dont just want to go buy another battery without some thoughts first.
