Both Headlamps Stopped Working

Post by Mad Max » Fri Jan 01, 2021 2:06 pm

Hi all,

Bit of an odd one this, took the Puma out today and noticed that neither of the front dipped / main beams were working.

All other lights are fine, including the side lights / indicators in the headlamps.

When I do try the main beam, I've noticed that the blue light on the dash isn't even illuminating.

I've checked the fuses in the engine bay and cabin but they all look fine.

2002 1.7, if that makes any difference.

Cheers!

Update - I had a look at the diagrams for the fuse box:

https://www.autogenius.info/ford-puma-fuse-box-diagram/

Looks to be K243 and 244 that are the relays for the low / main beam. I tried swapping them with the fuel pump relay, fuel pump still works but headlight still do not...

One other symptom to add - rear fog isn't working, but I'm guessing this is just because the lights aren't.

I am no auto electrician but I would check the wiring to the lights for damage or corrosion, earth straps next on the list but it can’t be anything serious as you say all the other lights work

Possibly the switch on the column. unfortunately I don't have a Puma specific wiring diagrams, only the Fiesta Haynes Manual, this does NOT correlate, as the power on the Fiesta goes via Fuse 20 (20 amp), but that not used on my Puma.
But assuming the stalks are the same, you should have a switched live feed to pin 4 on the column switch, if the headlight flash function operates the blue warning light, that would prove you have a feed to pin 4.The feed for the side lights are NOT ignition switched, so use a different section of the switch.
Sorry unable to help any more, but without the specific diagram its difficult.

Hi all - plan is to strip the stalk off tomorrow and have a nosey at that, but that last link looks promising - only issue is that the link in the other thread to the Puma People site is no longer working.

Are there more fuses hidden on the back of the cabin fuse box? Two screws on top and then clip it out I'm guessing...?

Perfect! As my registration for PumaPeople doesn't appear to have worked (no email) and I can't see it without it.

I'll give it a go - many thanks!

PumaPeople links have not worked properly for some time. I located the picture up from the Gallery section:

Both Headlamps Stopped Working

Post by Mad Max » Sun Jan 03, 2021 2:13 pm

Hi all - problem solved, it was the 20A ignition / lights fuse no.49.

Best description I found for getting the GEM / fuse box out was this:

https://workshop-manuals.com/ford/puma_ ... ule_(gem)/

I have no idea what possessed Ford to hide these fuses where they did... it kinda defeats the point of having easy to access fuses!

Thanks again for all the help everyone :-)

Thanks Yog for providing that , as I also couldn't view the Pumapeople link.
Mad Max, thanks for providing an update. I am surprised that you hadn't noticed your missing ignition light , which may have pointed you sooner to the problem. Surely with the missing ignition light , the alternator wouldn't be able to charge and your battery would have lost it's charge?
I wonder what caused the fuse to blow is there any bare wires that could have shorted out?

Hi DOH - Nope, I missed the missing "idiot lamp"!

Had no probs with the battery, but then it did only do four trips totalling about 30miles. I checked around, couldn't see anything obvious, if it pops again I'll investigate further.

Ok, this saga isn't done yet - now the fuel pump fuse is blowing. I needed to use the car today, so I stole a fuse from the headlamps... and another... and another, but she got me there and home.

So, I think I now know the cause - when I was trying to diagnose the headlamp issue I switched the fuel pump / headlamp relay, to see if it made any difference.

Time to order a new relay...
