As above really, I was thinking due to fuel and road tax rises, how does it compare to it's big brother.

Damian.

Fuel wise there isn't much in it. Yes it's a smaller engine, but then you may have to work it harder to get anywhere.

Parkers quotes 39mpg for the 1.4 and 38mpg for the 1.7. I normally get 40mpg from my modified 1.7 so it's all how you drive really.

The road tax is only £120pa, as opposed to £185-£205 depending on when it was registered for a 1.7.

The 1.4 is 3 groups lower for insurance though at 9 whereas the standard 1.7 is 12.

The above answers quite well really :)

Basically you save money on tax and insurance but not really fuel.

the 1.4 is more to insure, honest, been lots of talk on forums regards this issue - possibly due to its appeal to younger drivers.

I did complete on line quotes and found this to be true

I hae a 1.4 and its great fun , and has the same looks and styling at 1.7 , no one would ever know the difference.

I did an online car quote spree recently for my daughter that has just turned 17.
1.4 puma was £1000 1.7 was £1600

hmmmmmm may be it has changed,a lot of folk backed up my views on an old and dated puma owner site. Maybe it depends on the driver etc.

These are the insurance groups. If the 1.4s were more of a risk than 1.7s, the group ratings would be the other way around. That's why old xr3is had a terrible rating even though they were crap performers. All a matter of risk.

From the Association of British Insurers just now:

http://www.thatcham.org/abigrouprating/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; ... 347&row=20

Insurance groups in bold:

175 248 01 FORD PUMA COUPE 1 1388 1998 - 2001 3 P M 9 19 E T2
175 240 01 FORD PUMA COUPE 1 1679 1997 - 2001 3 P M 12 25 E T2

A 1.4 should still be cheaper than a 1.7 to insure with a level playing field.

Some insurers go only on their own history of claims, rather than anything else. Best advice is to shop around :eek:k:

Still thinking of getting the 1.4 due to owning 2 cars. I have an issue with the new road tax costs on the 1.7, insurance is not really an issue due to me being 28 and full no claims.
I've heard so many good things about the 1.7 engine.

Help ?

Road tax is a bitch, I've got to pay mine this month. If you look at it though, the difference between a 1.4 and 1.7 as far as the road tax is concerned, works out at just over £5 a month.

I may be biased, but I'd go for the 1.7. The differences in cost are negligible. Fuel economy depends on how you drive it.

The 1.7 has a lot more oomph in comparison, I'd be lost driving a lower powered car now. That's not just driving the puma either, I went from a 1.8 XR3i to a 1.6 Escort Finesse- 6 months later I was back driving an XR3i as I missed having that little bit of power when I needed it.

yeah road tax is crazy. thats the only thing i loved about my little 1.25 fez, lol

1.7 was totally unique as well, it was never, and will never be in another car.

Apart from all those xxxxxxxx fitting them into their fiestas.

And also in KA's, not that I have a problem with it

They have to go somewhere.

why dont they just leave the engine in the puma and drive that,
much nicer looking car imo (never have liked fiesta's,even xr's)

True, but have you any idea how fast a ka would be with a 1.7 in it? Its all about getting the power down though in a FWD.

Hope to find out at FITP if Pumaka is still coming

:eek:k:
