Is the gorgeous Puma a future classic? Heard/read differing views so would love to hear thoughts and views from Puma owners.

When any car becomes rare due to scrappage it become collectable. If the car in question has good looks and is nice to drive and in the 1.7 Puma's case has a dedicated engine not fitted to any other product, then sure it will become a classic. Trouble is it will take another 15 years to reach that criteria IMO ..........And i will be brown bread :)

Cool. Didn't know that. I read somewhere that a lot of Ford's don't make classic status, only the Cosworth models and a friend of mine reckons the Capri's getting there now.

Hopefully I'll still have mine in fifteen years. Certainly looking that way at present. The more I drive it, the more I love it. Awesome car.

Goody good. More I didn't know! Never driven a Ford Cosworth model. Can imagine they're fun to drive but they look ugly.

Try looking at the prices of Mk1/2 escorts

Depends if you mean classic status or desirable and valuable. A 1980's Nissan Bluebird is a classic but it's still not desirable and valuable, yet an 80's Cosworth for example is. Any Ford has a good chance as Ford has such a large and dedicated following, although the non-sporty models tend to take a little longer to come up to value for a number of reasons. If you compare 60's and 70's Fords to 60's and 70's Vauxhalls there's a massive gap in desirability and value because one has created a cult following whereas the other just died down and hasn't really picked up again yet. I think it will be a lot closer when todays STs, RSs and VXRs become classics.

I can't see the Puma becoming hugely valuable, not for a long time at least, but I definitely think it has what it takes to become a well appreciated classic so hopefully the market and value will grow in time.

How can you say this is ugly???

I think people are confusing "classic" with value. I am sure the Puma will be a classic but not sure it will ever reach dizzy heights in value, even low mileage un-molested ones.

Being a classic does not really have any baring on value unless it is seriously rare or collectable.

Classic can apply to almost anything if you love it enough, look at the Allegro/Meastro/Montego, all classics but still able to pick them up for almost nothing (if you can find one not in a bucket)

Puma is definitely achieving classic status because of being unique and virtually unchanged throughout its life (course the "millie" is even more of a classic!!!)

I think it belongs up there with the other classic/fast/one off fords just a shame that unless the Government changes its policy it will never be tax free

Once had a Standard 8, cost peanuts, hand painted it, sold it for less peanuts....saw one recently priced at £2500

Some interesting posts here. I think what I meant by classic status was desirability factor. I was thinking how I look at some cars 20 + years old and think, that's pretty cool and that's from when I first see the car and have no idea what the engine specification is etc.

With it's design, that's why I thought it may be a classic one day as (in my opinion) no other car looks quite like it.

Yep, will take a while but i reckon the puma will be a classic

The frp is probably borderline already....they're rare, handmade and i paid less for mine that its worth now. a ford is very rarely an 'investment' but i haven't lost money on mine so im happy. Keeping it until aston v8s hit rock bottom ;-)

And yes; the cosworths are butt ugly; the sierra lookes like a boat with tiny sofa wheels on!! just cos they slapped a cossie badge and a a few grills on it doesnt stop it being an ugly family car!

I would agree with your definition of "classic", that is exactly why I bought a Puma in the first place instead of a characterless modern turbo eurobox.

Having owned a mk1 Escort Mexico that I regret selling :( and an RS Sapphire Cosworth which is low mileage and completely standard that my father purchased off of me when i bought my first home, I genuinely think the puma will become a classic. It is such a fun car to drive and has me making excuses to use it, when I had fallen out of love with driving with modern European models. I have a smile on my face once again.

Most sporty Fords do gain value, you try getting a good condition xr3i, xr2 or and rs turbo for under £5k.

Bag for the buck the Puma has to be a steal at this moment in time, get a rust free one and keep it in a carcoon!

Love that. So true.

Like what FordFan said as well, I love driving mine so much and do find excuses to drive it. I mentioned to my friend not so long ago, I don't mind throwing money at my car as I get so much pleasure out of it.

A car I love the look of and love to drive. Can't ask for more really.

love driving mine, missing at mo.

oilburner....that's just a pic of an ugly family car with tiny wheels that has more stickers on!!! ;-p

(says me with rally stickers on my frp!!)
