I had the same problem with mine.
Found Eurocarparts were the cheapest for them at the time or http://www.tailgatestruts.com/ford-tailgate-struts/puma-tailgate-struts/gsc1399-ford-puma-tailgate-strut.
There is a spring clip on the top and bottom of each strut and they can be easily prised off with a flat bladed screwdriver. Once off the strut will pull off from the mount. Refitting is the reverse of removing.
Please make sure that you have someone with you to hold the tailgate up while doing the job as one strut will not hold up the tailgate or use a block of wood to hold the tailgate up.
I took the brackets off the bottom of mine to clean the crap from underneath it - but its a matter of choice.
