A question for the guys and gals who tow your Puma. What do you have? Rent or own a trailer? I've seen a few cheap trailers on eBay that are single axle and seem to be big enough for the Puma. I'm thinking if I can get a single axle rather than a double, it'll keep the weight down and I won't need a larger tow car. Just want to know what you guys have or can recommend?

Not towed a track car for years but a single asked trailer was fine for an Escort/Anglia/frogeye.So long as the weight is distributed well plus single axle is easier to move around when unhitched.

I finally bit the bullet earlier this year and bought one of these

after borrowing and renting various trailers and beavertail recovery trucks over the years with dubious tyres/electrics/tow hitch etc etc I decided enough was enough and coughed up based on the fact I can keep it at my daughters house and could save myself the money/time/worry using something I dont know about.

My initial idea was to be able to start towing my concours Xr2 to events (something I said Id never do, but just look at the way prices have gone for these things!) and I did tow it 160 miles each way to Sandown racecourse for the International Ford show in April. I also used it to tow the Millie home from Lincoln. Probably wouldn't have bought Millie without the trailer as it,d mean tax/insurance costs. I've also thought it'd be nice to do an odd trackday in the red Puma without worrying about breaking it and not getting home. At a cost of at least £50 a day and the running about collecting/returning the trailers making sense. It also allowed me to buy an engineless Puma for just £50 that would have gone straight to the scrapper the next day as I managed to trailer it to my mates yard 20 miles away ready for me to break when I get round to it.

The biggest reason for getting the trailer though is that I finally have a car that can tow a decent weight - Freelander 2 - which can pull 2 tons. The trailer weights 610kg, can take a load of 2090kg, the Xr weights 875 and the Puma 1100. I've also got a 21 years old Discovery which can pull 3500kg so in theory I can get the Freelander on the trailer and pull it with the Disco. Which reminds me I'm in the local Landie club as well and fancy doing some off roading/quarry stuff with a tatty old disco/vitara etc when I get round to it.

I would be a touch careful about single axle car transporters though, like a caravan..get a puncture at speed and it could be a bit messy. And check your license. Old buggers like me who passed before 1998 (ish) can tow a lot more than after that.

Great advice. I don't have a B+E licence so I can only tow over 750 kgs if the trailer doesn't weigh more than the tow car and that the MAM of the combination doesn't exceed 3500 kgs. That's why I'm looking at single axle trailers, so that the MAM isn't too high whilst still being able to hold the weight of the Puma. Hopefully I can find one cheap enough and find a suitable tow car (an estate rather than a 4x4). It makes more sense than hiring as you can sell it on afterwards and there won't be the expense of having to hire one if you need to drop the car off at the garage etc. Does anyone here tow with a single axle trailer?
