Do I need a waxing!

Postby Lostbarbel » Fri Sep 15, 2017 9:07 pm

Having taken my new cat to a local bodywork specialists who restores vintage and ageing sports cars we put it on the ramp and were pleasantly surprised at how good a condition it is underneath. He recommends giving it him for a couple of hours before winter to wire brush some parts and give the whole underside a spray with wax. Is this better than asking him to underseal it?

Are you getting confused with Waxoyl, which is a particular brand of underseal?

Hmm, don't know! Speaking to my local garage today they were saying they would recommend a wax spray which contains a rust inhibitor and seeps into all joints and cracks. I think that's what my respray guy had in mind.

How much does this cost?
How long does it last for?

Hi.
My garage charges about £30 to waxoyl the underneath. He says it is preferable to Schultz because it allows any rust to breathe rather than trapping it under the sealing agent. Lasts approximately 2 years before needing to be redone.

He is wrong then. To do that, Waxoyl would need to be microporous and it's not and you only have to look at what's in it to see that. The self healing creep properties of Waxoyl is also a myth.

Does it smell when, say, exposed on the hot exhaust?

Just been waxed! My guy cleaned everything underneath and says he then used a gallon of wax. Unlike Gimmickyflea my guy charged £80... But it saved me from trying to do it without a ramp in the cold and wet. Yes, it smelled a bit initially but this wore off after a few days and he told me it would last several years. Best time to do it - NOW!
