Hi
I need to change the starter motor on my 1.7. Could someone tell me if it's best to approach the job from underneath the car and what I'll need to remove to get there - couple of the mounting bolts look like they'll be tricky to get to.

Any advice greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Steve

yep best from underneath

undo battery

3 bolts holding it to gearbox

2 nuts hold electrical doodars on

Im a total machanical amature and even i managed to hange it ha its dead easy to get to from underneeth just follow the wires and as said undo the bolts :D

Just been fighting with the starter motor on our 1.4, its undone but with the oil filter, dipstick tube and inlet manifold all around it seems impossible to slip it out without taking more stuff off, so before I do that anyone got any info before I start?

uxter, wish i'd known earlier, i was in darlo at around 2 and could have come and helped. if you need to remove the dipstick tube its an easy 1 bolt removal and it pops out of its hole, should then (hopefully) give you that tiny bit more room to be able to kick the rear of the starter over to clear the oil filter.

cheers for the info me hearties, I didnt notice the dipstick was removable, I am presuming the bolts on a bracket further up? that will make life a lot easier cheers, and thanks for the offer of the help, much appreciated

My electrical doo dahs were held on with 3 nuts, 2x 13mm and a little wee 10mm hiding in the undergrowth little bas.......
off at the repairers now, find out 2moz if thats the culprit.

Reminded me that I havent had to replace a starter motor since around 1986, that was a Ford as well, my much missed Mark 2 Escort, I think that starter motor weighed more than the Pumas engine!
