Site maintenance

Post by red » Wed Jan 15, 2014 4:33 pm

Next week (probably) I'll be looking to do some lengthy maintenance on the site.

The operating system that the site runs on is very old and needs updating. Unfortunately there's no direct path which means that I need to build a new server and migrate the content of the site over. During this period I will be taking the board offline so that the most recent posts aren't lost in the process.

I'll post here with the expected date of disruption which I'll know after I've ordered the new server.

This won't change any of the functionality or usability.

A likely story. You just want to build one of these:

IMHO the real power of Mac is not its design, but the OSX itself.

Speaking from personal experience since 1998...

This may proceed tonight providing I have enough time.

The new server is up and running and appears to be functioning as expected after testing it with a backup from earlier in the week.

The board will display an offline message for the duration of the work.

I didn't get time due to impromptu visits over the weekend hence it'll likely be during the week now.

that might sound attractive to some - having you offline twice instead of once!

Better late than never I suppose!

The board will hopefully be coming back online for everyone.

Basically it was running on a virtual server running Ubuntu 8.04 which up until last year was fully supported. Since it reached the end of it's support period it meant we had to move to ensure we continue to be able to get updated software and security fixes etc.

In the past I'd have upgraded the operating system but because of how these servers exist in the virtual world they've been adapted to suit the provider infrastructure etc. Meaning the only option was to rebuild.

I held off slightly because the provider at the time only had 10.04 available and since that to is getting long in the tooth I thought I'd hold out for 12.04 which is Ubuntu's most current LTS version.

At the same time as building the new server, migrating the site as is I also took the opportunity to upgrade the form software phpBB since we were lagging by one revision.

I've tested a few things and everything seems to be operational as per the pre-migration however if you notice anything quirky which you'd not noticed previously then please feel free to get in contact either on this thread of via PM.
