Hi there. I have a Puma Thunder which I've owned since new but which has been garaged, undriven, since 2006. It's done about 45,000 miles.

I'm now in a position to get it overhauled and back on the road but I'd like to send it to a specialist to have all the things done that will inevitably need doing.

Does anyone have any recommendations for a company which would be good for this sort of work? Thanks in advance.

West Kent. I'm happy for it to go anywhere though, and since it can't be driven at present it'll need to travel on the back of a lorry to get it there.

10 years stored

You'll want to have all the fluids and filters replaced, brakes checked, tyres checked, cambelt replaced at a minimum I''d have thought!

Then there's the perishable items such as rubber bushes and mounts etc

Let us know how you get on :D

As for garages, we have a recommended garages list somewhere here, some will be much closer than others

Yes, it's going to need lots doing to it. It will need four new tyres, cambelt replaced (it's never been done) and the engine cleaned out good and proper. I took a look at it earlier and there's no sign of rust anywhere, even on the wheel arches which is good. It has been garaged and under a cover for a decade though. I feel slightly bad even thinking of taking it out and getting it road ready.

As you are in West Kent - I wonder if these would be any good to you: http://blog.performancepuma.com/

Stevie is a ProjectPuma member and knows his stuff when it comes to Puma's.

PerformancePuma look good - shame they are not in the North-West!

Since I got my Puma in late 2012 I've had it serviced at a Ford main dealer. To be honest, their 'value' Service is pretty good cost-wise, and of course they know what is due and when. I figured the minimal cost difference between that and a 'under-the-arches' type of place was negligible. I used Ford basically as they are close to where I work and also, despite my car's age, all but two of the Services had been done by Ford, so I wanted to keep that up.

I was a little surprised, though, when I went to the dealership to see if the car was ready the first time I took it there. As I knew the staff fairly well (my Ka had been serviced there for 10 years) they took me into the workshop. The car was up on a ramp with a group of Ford techs standing under it. I panicked a little bit, wondering what the issue was, and wondering if I'd bought a death-trap or cut-and-shut - no, I was told, it was because most of the young techs had never seen one before! They do have a couple of long-term techs, though, that worked on Pumas when the cars were new, and it's those guys that generally work on mine, so I trust what they do is correct.

The final added benefit I have is once serviced by Ford you get a year's Breakdown coverage, so I know that in the event of any issues it will be recovered in to Ford.

Good luck, anyway!

As the working parts of the Puma are Fiesta based and closely related to the original Ka I found my local Ford Main Dealer very good and cost effective in maintaining my low mileage Puma. It probably helped that I knew the Service Manager too.
