Hi y'all
Just want to introduce myself
Bought my first Puma, although i'm no stranger to a blue oval, having previously owned an Escort xr3i and a new edge Cougar, and currently own two mk5 Cortina's

Thanks guys, I'm guessing red puma's are a bit rarer? there's two in my town, the other one is a daily driver
Have a question, On my insurance form my puma is coming up as a Thunder model, i'm not sure about this, can anyone clarify

Red would have been a common colour choice new as it was a "free" colour, unlike the metallic. Buy a silver one if you really want to blend in with the crowd.

Thunder only came in silver or grey and had Fiesta Zetec S mk5 type alloys and leather seats. Never any red Thunders and I doubt anyone would have bothered to repaint one and put standard allys on it. The only thing I can think is that its a very late reg on 52 so maybe someone thinks its part of the last 2000 made (all Thunders). My 02 red on was registered 8/02 but built 6/01 whereas my Thunder was built 11/01 and registered 01/02. The red one sat around for ages before being registered as its a base model with no a/c or lecky mirrors/ heated screen etc

mine's is quite a good spec, air con (which still works) 6 cd changer, front heated screen, electric mirrors, all in all it's great value for the price i paid, just wish the previous owners had looked after it a bit better

[post]357146[/post] Hi and welcome. Is your Puma a 1.6 as shown in your model details ?

It came out the factory as a 1.6 at least with that registration plate.. who knows..

Always good to welcome another Ford fan to the forum. Hopefully you've got a 'keeper' there. Those Cortina's sound good, too.

A nice purchase red is quite a rare just like my green puma not that many for sale and i agree previous owners should look after their pumas better mine was just the same needed lots of welding and tlc!

Yeah it's the 1.6 with the se engine(which happens to have a leak)

My puma's going in for it's mot tomorrow
i'm really not sure, it's had advisories for the sills, i had a look and they don't seem too bad, looks a bit scabby but looks like it's been done by foot scuffs and the like so not too concerned
it might need a new tyre but that's no major hassle, the bit i'm worried about is stuff like suspension components, brake lines, bushes and bearings
really depends on how it gets on tomorrow, if it fails and it's going to cost me hundreds i think i'll just sell it on
we'll see

Probably it will fail, but don't give up. I spent £800 on my Puma last year, but never let me down. I love the red colour, if it's lowered and the badge is off, from behind it looks like a mini super-sport car.

Did fail, big style, black marks for the sills, handbrake only on one wheel and power steering leaking, put it up for sale, if it doesn't go i might just take it off the road but the last thing i'll do is scrap it

I've spent, well, quite a bit of money on mine, Alan - bodywork, as always, seems to be the Puma's biggest killer. I had my inner and outer rear arches completely rebuilt by hand and then it still failed the next MOT on the passenger seat mounting points (rusting too near the securing bolts). That was professionally rebuilt, too, and then the bottom of the car totally under-sealed.

It sounds like you know your Fords a bit, and as much I love the brand they do like to make cars that rust a little. I used to wash my 2.0 Capri every two weeks and take the opportunity to repair rusting bits on it. The Puma is just an extension of that!

Power-Steering lines are prone to corrosion, due I believe to where they sit and not made from the greatest materials - my KA was the same, and the corroded PS Lines cost about £600 to be repaired, as it was a full section - not sure on the Puma what the cost would be. The question is whether you want to throw money at it and keep it on the road. I pondered that, and realised that I was happy to take that choice - it's still a gem of a car, but while residuals on Pumas remain rock-bottom at the moment, it may be worth looking at a replacement if you really want a good one - on the proviso that you may be buying more trouble, of course.

Anyway - best of luck, and look after those old Fords - they do need some pampering!

Sorry to hear that...:-(
