Reprogram a remote key fob (central locking)

Ha yeah :-)

Is the coil pack the small glass tube, within a red plastic holder? Should it be attached to anything at all?

Cheers,

Steve.

Yes it is.

I think it doesn't need to be attached, just put it in the other key.

That's right, the transponder stands on it's own.

Reprogram a remote key fob (central locking)

Post by Major Malfunction » Wed Mar 09, 2016 10:01 pm

My one and only key fob has died! Made even more annoying by the fact I cant unlock it manually on the drivers side!

Its a 3 button radio frequency one, changed the battery and tried to reprogramme it with no luck :-(

Other than an expensive trip to the dealer, does any have any advice?

Major Malfunction, have you checked that post battery replacement that the contacts are correctly touching the battery?

Else you can get a second hand button part and clip you key part in to it, swap the transponder over, reprogram it and away you go.

Thanks Red! Seems obvious now but as you say the RC circuit board is seperate to the transponder and key blade. So I bought a second hand £6 key from ebay, swopped the circuit board side, followed the steps at the beginning of this thread, and voila...a working key!

Three Button Remote

1. Put the key in the ignition and turn it to position II and back to 0 four times quickly but steadily, but must be within 6 seconds)
2. When you remove the key the LED on the clock or the rear fog light switch (bizarre, but there you go) should light up constantly.
3. Within 20 seconds press any key on the remote that you want to program.
4. The LED should flash now to indicate that the programming was successful.
5. To end the programming mode wait 20 seconds or switch the ignition on.

***

Method 2 - Three Button Remote 1999MY (Tested)

1. Insert the key into ignition.
2. Turn the key to position II and back to position I - 4 times in quick succession (within 3 seconds)
You should be end up at position I
3. You should hear a beep and the rear fog light switch will illuminate
4. You now have around 10-20 seconds to press any key on the fob
5. You will hear a second beep and the indicators will flash (as if you've hit the hazard light switch briefly) to confirm your key press has been registered.
6. Wait for the rear fog light switch to go off.
7. You should now be able to lock/unlock/open the boot.
8. Get out of the car shut the door and try it!

***

Difficulty: 1/5 as long as you can follow instructions.
Sorry if this is a stupid question, but any ideas which process I'd need for my 2002 Thunder? Just changed batteries on my Key and it's still not unlocking via remote.

indeed interesting question :) try method 1... if does not work try method two... if still doesn't work...
post #2:
I've tried all that, and it still won't work!

Sometimes, a failed attempt at programming the key can scramble something in the electrics.
1. Open the Drivers Door
2. Loosen off the Rubber Lining in the Front Bottom Corner
3. Pull the Carpet Away in that Corner
4. Disconnect the wiring block for about 30 seconds
5. Reconnect and try again.

Also worth checking is the connections within the remote i.e the 2 metal contacts to the battery.

if still doesn't work... something is not right...

A 2002 Puma will have the 3 button remote.

Hmmm... tried both 3-Button methods. No luck, so something else amiss, I think.

Reprogram a remote key fob (central locking)

Post by philburgs » Mon Jul 18, 2016 9:31 am

There's a lot of good information in this post thanks everyone for sharing your knowledge.

I have a 98 Puma 1.7 which is in pretty poor condition to be honest but its such a great drive I want to keep it going as long as I can. I've owned it for about 6 years and have been putting up with the following intermittent faults which I feel maybe related.

It has a single 2 button IR remote which seems to work ok as its light flashes when I press either of the buttons. It wont unlock the central locking by remote however but works ok in all the locks manually so I suspect that it needs to be reprogrammed. I have tried the 2 button method above but I cant get the car to go into re-programming mode. The light near the clock continues to blink in the normal fashion as when the ignition is off.

Possibly related to this, the car has the following other symptoms.
Occasionally the light near the clock and the yellow light on the dash to show that a door is open stays on permanently when the engine is running.
Occasionally all the external indicator lights (but not the green indicator light on the dash) come on and stay on regardless of whether the engine is running or the car is locked up. I have replaced the indicator relay and sprayed electrolube in to the multifunction stalks to try and clean things up but the fault persists. Next time this happens I will disconnect the stalks to see if the fault is in there or in the rest of the system.
Pressing the boot lock does not open the boot I can only open the boot manually with the key. Using the key in either door operates the central locking on the other door in the correct manner.

I think I might have a fault with the Central locking module (where is this located on the car?), or possibly with the alarm. As I only have one key I'm worried that if I disturb some of these components that the immobiliser may loose its codes and then I''l be up the creek...

Any help gratefully received!

I'm going to try this method on my 2000 puma. Timpsons cleaned out the battery area inside and said I could reprogramming it so from these comments it seems fairly straightforward! I'll post my success/failure

Reprogram a remote key fob (central locking)

Post by alerno » Sat Feb 17, 2018 12:58 pm

Hi,

Thanks so much. May I ask: Can I configure two different remotes for central locking?

BTW contrary to what Ford told me, I was perfectly able to configure an (original Ford) modern retractable remote for CL. Problem is now they have configured a normal Puma (round FOB) and the long modern remote doesn't work.

Thanks.

You should be able to program 2 remotes, from memory you just do them both at the same time?
