What is that box under the bonnet?

On the underside of the bonnet, as standard, there is an oblong plastic box. It isn't attached to anything, and doesn't look as though it serves any purpose. So what does it actually do?

The simple answer is: not much.

Ask the question on the forum and the usual answer is that it's a baguette warmer, or somewhere to keep your bacon butty warm!

The truth is rather more tenuous. This box is intended to be a resonator box, with purpose of transmitting the engine noise better to the driver. It's no detriment to leave it in place, but equally you're not going to notice a blind bit of difference if you remove it.
