[post]368244[/post] A lot of suppliers request the old Alternator on an exchange basis , unless it's an outright purchase.
So he might not be able to retain it for you.

A noisy Alternator can be easily diagnosed by spinning by hand , if it's really bad the bearing might have play in it .

Top bloke to deal with although he can be difficult to contact by phone as he is often either recovering a Puma(driving) or dismantling it.
email or Facebook him is often a good way to contact him.

Thanks DOH for that information.

He said he was 109% sure it was the bearings in the alternator

You can make a diagnosis yourself as it is really straightforward. Just take the largest screwdriver you have and lean the tip of it onto the housing of the alternator near pulley. Let the engine running and put the tip of the screwdriver onto the housing and lean your ear against the handle. So basically, your screwdriver becomes a stetoscope
If you hear a grinding sound as if something is going to tear apart every second, that is the sign that bearing has gone south.

I had the same problem and replaced the bearings. You can check it here: https://www.projectpuma.com/viewtopic.php?t=26486&start=25

Thanks for the reply Wild E. Coyote,
Yes i used a large screwdriver and listened and yes,i can hear the noise.
I wouldn't have a clue what size bearings they are and there cost.
As I need my car daily to travel, I haven't got the time myself to take the alternator off to find out this information.
I'll just get the garage to buy a new one and fit.
Thanks again..

Any bearing specialist store should have a catalogue that would tell him the size of bearings needed for alternator. I might even have somewhere the boxes still and have a look for them, if you want me to

Thanks Wild E. Coyote",
if it's not to much trouble that would be great.
I think there is a bearing company not far from where i work,if you can't find the size,i can pop to the bearing company monday and ask if they know.
You think it best to replace both bearings as there are two?
Thanks..

You can check it here: viewtopic.php?t=26486&start=25

Very useful information on rebuilding the Alternator , which was done in 2 stages.
Thanks Sinisa for taking the time to post and also provide a reference back to your post again today.

Hi all, did find the boxes! I used PFI bearings (http://www.pfibearings.com/eCatalogue).
The big one is 17/47 mm x 115 mm (ID/OD x width). #6303-2RS C3.
The small one is 8/23 x 14 mm (ID/OD x width). #B3-23D

Hope that helps,

Much appreciated Wild E. Coyote, i can get the bearings for it now.
Question, this was the bearings for the original
mitsubishi alternator?

Yes, I went to a special store dealing with electrical stuff for cars. They just asked what type of alternator was in question, we went outside, they confirmed it was Mitsubishi and gave me these bearings based on catalogue data. They had PFI on stock and that was it.
I replaced them, they fit and the alternator is working nice and quiet

Hi Sinisa

Thanks for posting this information about the replacement alternator bearings.

Is there by chance a couple of typing errors, that may need amending in your post?

1) The large Bearing shows as 115m width , yet listings for the bearing with that part number are 14mm width ?
e.g.
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BEARING-...hash=item2ebdf08b0a:m:mAFlcgdXRlWQnbb2964YVqg

2)The smaller bearing, Is the part number B3-23D incorrect and should instead be a B8-23D, (as that has the dimensions that you have listed)?
e.g.
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/B8-23D-S...end-PFI-8x23x14mm/282033620728?hash=item41aa8

Thanks Sinisa.
Typing isn't my strength either  .
At least we all now have the correct part numbers for future reference when we need to replace the bearings in our Alternator .
