On the Road

While the Puma shares many of the attributes of Fiesta, Escort and Mondeo, there's little doubt that it takes the road going experience on offer to a different level. The more powerful of the two standard versions sports a 123bhp 1.7-litre Zetec-SE engine, capable of rest to sixty in just 8.8 seconds on the way to nearly 130mph. The smaller-engined 1.4-litre Puma is visually indistinguishable from the more powerful car. It reaches 60mph is a still respectable 10.8 seconds, incidentally, while average fuel consumption of 38mpg makes it a car you buy with both your heart and your head. If you can find a Racing, you'll enjoy 0-60 sprints in about 7.5 seconds and a top speed of 126mph while averaging around 34mpg. Whichever model you choose, it comes with an impeccable pedigree. The handling was refined by a team that included no less an expert than former World Champion Jackie Stewart; if you can imagine what that might mean out on the road, you won't even bother to test drive anything else.

Overall

As we've said, the finest small coupe ever made - bar none.

That's why I linked to the same review above, from another source. Other websites do change their content or even just cease to exist over the years, you know.

Not only that but right underneath the quoted Yahoo link it says this:

Ford Puma featured in this month's Modern Classics magazine - Under The Radar section. Good review.

From the second the covers came off Ford’s baby sports coupe in 1997, it was clear that the Blue Oval had a winner on its hands. And while its looks may have faded, the Puma is still a fantastic-handling car – and one of those future classics that remains under the radar.

Based on the Mk4 Ford Fiesta, the Puma was available with four engines. The entry-level was a 1.4-litre until 2000, when it was replaced with a 1.6-litre. There was a 1.7-litre VCT, and a Tickford tuned version of the engine, which was used in the Racing Puma.

While many remember the Puma fondly for its fine handling, it’s perhaps best known for the advertising campaign that promoted it. This featured clips of Steve McQueen from the film Bullitt appearing to drive a Puma through the streets of San Francisco.

[post]369099[/post] The comments on that article speak volumes.

So much so that I don't feel the need to come to the cars defence any more so can keep schtum.

Reading the comments made me really want another one. I haven't driven a Puma in nearly six years, so would love to remind myself what they were all about.
