Hi all, question for the mechanically minded members.

The rough noises I've been hearing at low speed are due to a gearbox bearing needing a replacement on my 2002 1.7.

I've been advised that getting the work done would cost around £550, which is a bit much given the car's value, so the same mechanic suggested I look for a replacement gearbox which he would be happy to fit, and it should cost less.

I would appreciate info about what gearbox to search for, whether it has a part/serial number or whether other Fords of the era used the same gearbox?

Thanks

The gearbox is an IB5 type, there are many different versions, (cable clutch, hydraulic clutch and cable gear change are 3 very different versions) and you'd be best searching for one from a 1.7 Puma, as it will have the correct ratios and final drive and hydraulic clutch

Thank you. There's one on Ebay but it's done double the distance my car has so I won't buy that one. Guess I'll just have to wait or spend too much money!

Haven't looked in the 3 specific Puma parts for sale groups
I would suggest a wanted advert on here and looking for people breaking Puma's on eBay, Gumtree etc

I have a spare brand new Puma gearbox in its original crate if you still need one? Part number on the casting is 96WT-7F096-AB and the updated number (on the crate label) is P96WT 7002 LF.
Cheers, Mike
