Your not allowed to put a younger number plate on an older car, so you cannot put S40FRP which is from 1999 on to a car that was made before 1999, like as you suggested a 1982 Yugo

Slightly inaccurate. I purchased the 1996 registration N100MGB from DVLA and had it on a 1980 built MGB. I purchased the MG unregistered/unused in 1996 and had it registered. After inspection the DVLA accepted it as a "new/unused" car and so allowed the 1996 registration to be issued.

I accept for used cars you cannot transfer a later date registration.
