Hypothetical question 2litre possible?

I have a hypothetical question which some may consider sacrilidge and others ridiculous, but here goes anyway; Would it be theoretically possible to swap out the 1.7 engine for a larger sized engine e.g. a 2 litre engine that had a hgher power output? or would it jeapordise the chassy integrity or just make it handle horribly?
