Losing Power?

1999 1.7 78000 miles. It seems like after 5000 revs, the power drops of a lot. It still revs away but power delivery doesnt seem the same as when I first had the car. It pulls fine up to 5000 like you'd expect. Its just after that it seems to hit a wall.
You'll probably all want to scream, but the last major service was in 2006 with 58000 miles.. Will a good service sort this out? Planning one in the next few weeks.
Any ideas what could be causing the power drop? Is it all in my head? Do they normally drop off in power? Am I going mad I don't know..
Hopefully the service will do her good! Just want the car back up to spec!

Yes the service and a cambelt change is definitely needed and then if it's not working right you can look further into it.

Take a look at your air filter...If its 9 yrs old just replace it... The old girl could be starving for air..
Change the oil and oil filter while your at it.. A good drop of Castrol magnatec 5w-30 A1 wont go astray..
