Seem to have intermittent strange noises from the region of the auxiliary belt. Car is fitted with working aircon and belt tension seems OK but often on start-up get a fairly loud repetitive noise from the belt area. Does not always happen and stops after a short time. Obviously cheap and easy to renew the belt but is there anything else could be the cause. It is not a bearing squeal !

it's definatly one of the pulley bearings.. belts don't make any noise as such..pulleys/bearings do..

the obvious ones are the idle pulley and tensioner both of which are prone to need replacing first...less obvious ones are PAS Pump or the bearings in the altenator may have gone noisy..

seconded. plus they are the cheapest things to start with!

they can rattle too rather than just whine like a bearing

Thanks for the tips. When the noise occurs it seems to have a very rhythmic muffled "beat" to it that coincides with the belt manufacturers marking rounding the alternator pulley. To my ear it has no metallic ring, squeal or rattle that you might expect from a dodgy bearing - and it is intermittent.

If it's sounds like a dry scraping sort of sounds that usually the tensioner... slightly awkward sod to get to from above or underneath...

Many thanks, I will try replacing belt and tensioner.
