pics please!!! :)

paulob1 i think you are being overcritical of the width issue. The 1400 rally cars just used massive rear spacers between beam and hub unit. They had no problem with them in structural terms.

If youre buying aftermarket wheels then you will likely be able to special order them in any reasonable ET offset you want. My caged FRP had lower offset speedlines specifically to fill the arches (as well as bigger spacers on back).

Im sure for what he wants as a tarmac car he would be fine with something like ET0 alloys or even a negative offset. FRP wheels are ET28 as standard so an ET0 wheel gives almost 30mm each side over FRP. Sure if hes using narrow wheels he will get more bearing wear, but not too big a deal on a toy car. If hes using wider wheels the problem will be less.

do you have a budget for it, as cheap as, money no issue, or somewhere inbetween...you say you have built cars before what are your skills, if they are in welding it isnt too big a job to copy the independant suspension set up of the kit cars then you can have the right width for the rear without multiple spacers and or wheels with massive offsets. You will also need to extend the upper mounting points for the dampers to keep them more or less vertical to ensure smooth action of the spring and damper...not essential I guess but steering geometry is complex..

The front will be more tricky, are you going for frp front end, you will need the special drive shafts the lower wishbones and the track rods, the suspension is set up differently too but I guess you will be using your own suspension units anyway so you will just need to get the right set up.

you will have a load of fun with this, are you planning to do UK Club rallying or rally cross or something else.

Anyone who can weld good can remake the wishbones, track rods are off the shelf or easily available through race/rally componant manufacturers as an adjustable track rod. Shafts are easily available from shaftec. Second hand hub carriers are available too or even new ones from ford as some previous people have found out.

The rear struts just have adjustable top mounts (as front). They are not significantly moved outwards at all. Its down to the design of the rear beam. Even the S1600 uses a massive large width hub block which spaces things out in terms of the wheel.

Thanks for the insights guys. I've built a few cars, couple of 205's, one for a friend in the Challenge, an Impreza STi and now this. I started road rallying back in '95, navigating and eventually co-drove for a variety of friends in Mk2 Escorts, Mazda 323's (gpN + gpA) and various 205gti's. Ended up driving a 205 in the ANWCC several years ago and then navigated on night rallies again. Built my Impreza but never used it...divorce etc..blah blah!
Always wanted a S1600 / 1400 challenge Puma so here I am. I'll defo hassle you guys so be prepared!! I'm enthusiastic, not overly skilled but will always find help to get it done right!

re offsets....im on et15 compomotives to fill frp arches. could still do with a 30mm spacer on the rear beam instead of 20.

compomotive were really helpful about offsets etc

Thanks. I've had contact with Speedline in the past and they too were helpful. Hoping to do selected ANWCC single venue events, budget permitting! Build funds around £4k although that soon goes out of the window!!! Rear F2 spoiler is expensive, £400+ seems excessive but I've got to use that one. What width wheels are you using?

I know. Problem is that MSA regs only let you add spoilers freely to race cars and only homologated ones to rally cars. All those hours of development by Ford in the wind tunnel had better be worth it! If anyone has a 2nd hand one for sale I will gladly buy it!! I'd possibly even go down the FRP arch route but there's a £300+ difference for me in price.

there was is an f2 spolier on ebay at the moment, or has it gone now, lost track for a few days...

hey its still on for 250 quid buy it now, go for it before I get it...

okay it will likely end up somewhere else as i am not overly keen on them...they look really naff in my humble opinion...
