Does anybody have a guide on where exactly to seal the scuttle panel, please? I don't know exactly where water is meant to run down or where it's supposed to be kept out.

Hello William..
The scuttle panel is designed to leak!
The water that collects there, just runs through to the bit of engine bay behind the carpet/plastic panel along the back.
It then drains out in the corners just near the suspension mounts.
These drains get blocked, especially if there have been leaves falling on the car at any point in it`s life.
the most technical tool you need is a pozidrive screwdriver and something to get the compost out with.
First, loosen the expansion tank and fusebox. then set about removing the panel.
once its out (dont force it) get all the crud out
once it`s clean just poke through in the corners and wash out with modest amounts of clean water.
BUT.. If you are leaking in the footwell it can be other things too.

Also depends which footwell. Drivers side is usually the sealant on the bulkhead shrinking and letting water in. Passenger side can be the same or/and the wiring grommet.

I've tried to find an image that shows under the bonnet where you can try sealing from to the top, but I haven't one. Basically, behind the wiper motor/pollen filter under the bonnet where the bulkhead and the inner wings meet. Sealing all along there and in the corners may sort the leak.

I had a root around under the bonnet yesterday, and I didn't get very far. These are the images I took after I loosened the fuse box and failed to move it very far.

I'm not sure how far down I need to get to seal things. I got the impression that I would have to remove the dashboard, because the wiring inside the cabin disappeared right up there where I couldn't see it. Any advice will be appreciated.

Hello again William.
Interesting pics, My first advice is to stop!
looking behind your plastic panel, I can see there is not much muck (meaning the drains are fine)
BUT..

I can also see that someone has used a sealant around the large loom grommet.
Looks like this is an ongoing thing and I don`t think the cure is as easy as that!
You really need to peel the carpet right back and find out where this is leaking (remember water doesn`t run upwards)
if you pull up the rubber door seal first its easy and it just pops back on.

I suspect it is a seal between body panels somewhere on the bulkhead,

Also, you`d better check for corrosion too. (bottom of the A-post)
I wish you luck..
Stu..

Here's a view under the dashboard (which I removed to sort my link); you can see in the corner where the water was getting in;

I have managed to remove most of the soggy soundproofing, but some of it is still stuck under the dashboard. The worst of the dampness is over the wheel arch, so the leak seems to be there, as you said, near the side of the car.

I snapped off some of the panel that's stuck in the footwell. The brown stuff you see is some kind of dirt that seems to have been left from the water.

It's hard to get a good photograph of what's up beneath the dash. This one is sideways:
