Hi all
I normally fill my Puma up with Shell VPower Nitro+ mainly because (a) it's meant to be better quality fuel/higher octane than supermarket fuel, and (b) she is a cherished car not my daily driver.

But it got me thinking recently, is this a good idea every time, given it has cleaning agents in there too? I know Redex isn't supposed to be too good for the Pumas' Nikasil cylinder liners. I wonder if any of the wise old heads here can advise? Thanks in advance

Will

Pretty sure V-Power is fine to use.

The problem usually occurs from an engine not being cared for, tiny scores and indentations can fill with carbon deposits throughout its life and thus retaining a smooth cylinder wall or piston. If a well used engine then has a change in care whereby cleaners are put through it, it can remove these carbon deposits revealing the scratches and indentations from previous poor care and suddenly cause the potential for problems.

That's my 2p worth anyway.

The original problem occurred due to the high sulphur content that existed in low quality fuels, many years ago:

Low Sulpher/Sulpher-Free petrol has been available for many years, so Nikasil problems should have shown on any engine by now:

My Puma has been running on Shell V-Power Nitro+ (or equavalent), since 2007 (under 6,000 miles), to the present day of approximately 45,000 miles, and not requiring any oil between services.
