taking off a heater control panel

hi, i have to replace the heater control panel, its the one with air con and cigarette lighter on it, my question is, i have unpluged all the plugs but cant figure out how to get the cable off from the dial that changes where you want the air to go, on the back it has two cogs and the cable seems to go up inside the cogs, i can disconnect it from the other end but i still need to get it off to put on the replacement panel, i have tried looking it up but still cant work it out, thanks

If this is the one you are thinking about with the arrow on the upper part of the image... twist slowly... eventually will fall out

It is actually a D type of connector...
