So turns out, the head gasket has definitely on our thunder. We have a few questions: Should we have the head gasket done and head skimmed etc, or just replace the engine? The car is too good to scrap and I know having the head gasket done in a garage wouldn't be worth it for the low value...

Any rough cost estimates on a head gasket change at a garage?

The leather seats in mine and my old mans thunder need a bit of love and care. No tears or rips in either sets of seats, but they are a bit worn on the bolsters and dull. Does anyone have any advice on the best products for restoring the leather?

Had it back from the garage today. They stripped the whole bottom end re done the lot. Don't know what the problem was but its all fixed now. Car is back to itself :D

Nope. Its my own policy. But I do live in Suffolk in the middle of nowhere. But I do have a limited mileage as I usually only do about 50 miles a week at a maximum!

Forgot to mention apart from acceleration and low end grunt, it starts runs and drives fine. it idles slightly lower than before as well.

Had a new timing belt fitted friday on my 1.7. Unfortunately got it back and it has lost all low end power, hesitates under acceleration and seems pretty unwell. I'm thinking it hasn't been timed right or something with the VCT has been ignored and has gone wrong? Its like there is no VCT...

Looking at service kits on ebay. Prices range from £13.50 to £80. Is this example a load of cheap trash? Any suggestions on good do it yourself kits online that won't break the bank...

1999 1.7 78000 miles. It seems like after 5000 revs, the power drops of a lot. It still revs away but power delivery doesnt seem the same as when I first had the car. It pulls fine up to 5000 like you'd expect. Its just after that it seems to hit a wall. You'll probably all want to scream, but...

21year old male, full time student, had my licence 9 months. £815 for a '99 1.7. Pretty happy with that!

So swapping the pretensioners over and putting the original plastic connections back should solve the problem? Any advice on how to swap them over? I'm a bit of a puma noob!

Ahh cheers. Didn't change the steering wheel. But the connection for the pretensioner was different. Had to take the wires out and swap the plastic connection over. I imagine this is what caused it?

Hi all. Just replaced the interior of my standard 1999 1.7 with a blacks leather interior. All went in fine, only thing is the air bag warning light now constantly flashes when driving along. Is this something I may have disturbed or a complete coincidence?
