Box attached to the under side of bonnet

Hi All

Could anyone tell me what the black box on the underside of the bonnet is for, I can't see anything connected to it.
Is it just a place to keep pies warm or does it have a purpose.

Its a resonator box that's supposed to make the engine sound fruitier

To be honest, I don't realy belive it does anything I have removed mine, and it made no difference what so ever but yes, that is it's intended purpous
