Fuel gauge reading the wrong way

My mate had the Puma before I bought it off him, he changed the fuel sender unit, but ever since then the fuel gauge has read backwards. All I know is my car was manufactured in 2000. Its a 1.7. I taxed my car yesterday and it wasn't pre 2001 tax rates... So im a bit confused what year it is... Whether the fuel senders changed at a specific date

They changed between the analogue and digital dashboards.

It would seem you have the wrong pump/ sender unit fitted and that you need to change it for a later one.

Just managed to get hold of my mate and he said it was from an older puma. So if i get a fuel sender from a 2001 then it will be fine?
