Hi gents, I'm in need of urgent help, my beloved puma is about to go to junkyard.
Always ran fine, no symptom of any disease until a few days ago, it suddenly stopped... in front of the door of MOT center!!!
Since then, no started sound, no fuel pump but all other electrical stuff is working fine (wipers, beams, etc...). Immobilizer light is flashing until position 2 it turns off.
I've checked all fuses and relays under the bonnet even swapped with parts from my other puma but nothing.
I guess pump and started not working are related to the same problem?
what are your thoughts about it ?
Is she definitely dead?
thanks a lot!!!
Pierre.

hi there, thanks for the answer Cubatoo.
I won't spend too much time incriminating fuel pump. Even if it was dead, I could at least hear starter waking up at pos 3.
Instead of that, just a low "tonc" seems to come from the bonnet, or behind the clocks, not sure.

I would say battery or battery connections, then earth's in the engine bay, the starter motor takes a lot of current, so even if the lights are working, that wouldn't prove the battery or connections, but the fuel pump not running is the strange thing, have you checked the fuel pump fuse ? It won't get the starter to work, but would help the diagnosis.
Don't forget to check the fuel pump reset button in the foot well

hi John, where's this reset button??? never heard about it?!!! besides the ecu?
one more strange thing : key turned pos 2 I can hear sort of Bzzzzzzz coming from the engine bay, under inlet manifold which is right place of the starter. this sound I don't have in my second puma.
I'm so disapointed. end of week I 'll have to make a decision and let It go to the junkyard for 60£!!!!

It's near the diagnostic port in the passenger footwell on UK cars, as I said that is not the cause of the starter motor not working. It may well be the starter motor itself, but check the relevant battery and earth connections first.
There is a braided earth between the engine block and the bulkhead, it's near the coolant header bottle, I have seen them broken and the car would still start, but others have found that if it's broken the car won't start, so worth checking that as well.

Hi Pierre,

First of all what is your Puma worth to you? Usually the scrapman (Cartakeback) is good will give you about £250 or more, if the car is reasonable then the MOT station should be able to help or you could join a breakdown service and they will come out. I`m sure the garage will perform some basic checks if you ask them, presuming you might use them for MOT repairs if required, you can use that to cajole them into helping perhaps?

Looks like the drive pinion of the starter solenoid engages making this 'tonc' sound, but the starter itself doesn't spin. Try to strike the starter with a hammer from underneath the car.

Hi all,
thanks for your answers.
Aleks, I did it already but it was useless this time. Although, I'm still quite sure this is all about a faulty starter.
to answer Mukamika, my car sadly worth...nothing! the scrapman will give me 70£ and that's a shame but no other option.

Hi there! Are you sure you're kicking the starter motor not the starter solenoid. Cause it's the latter only visible and accessible from under the bonnet.
As the other forum members said, it could be related to a bad earth issue. Also check the battery voltage (use cheap Chinese 1£ multimeter).
Open up the battery junction box cover and swap the same coloured relays.
Don't scrap for 70£. If I could, I'd give you 100£.
These are fairly simple procedures. Do them first

yesterday again I lifted the car to kick the start (with brutality!) => nothing.
other checks (fuses and relays) I've already done swapping them with new ones.

Hi,
yes, bump did nothing because fuel pump doesn't engage.
Now I want to apologize for this loss of time, and also and above all thank you for those replies.
I couldn't make it another way and now car has gone to scrap.
very sad monday somehow.

You`re welcome, sorry it had to go, perhaps you`ll get another?
