How to test car alarm?

This may be a stupid question but is there a simple test I can do to see if it works? I've tried shaking the car when it's been locked but nothing happens....

Electrically, the central lockign seems fine.

Open door or bonnet when alarm is on. i.e. leave window open, put alarm on, wait a minute, open door from inside.

I think that's how I checked mine. Yes, a basic alarm I'm afraid.

very basic. set alarm, someone smashed the window, climed in and ut of it whilst ripping out my stereo. silence. :'( then i opened the door and it all kicked off. Very basic indeed
