Hi,after the excellent advice i received from my last query regarding the correct fuel tank to fit,i was wondering ,would any member know ,or be able to recommend a competent and reliable garage in the canterbury area, who would fit a new clutch, slave cylinder, and cam belt, without charging a fortune, and what do members think would be a fair price for the work.I eagerly await your advice gentlemen!!!! : :

That's quite a lot of labour really and since i've not had a clutch replaced I can't give a price from experience.

I think my cambelt was about £300 on it's own though.

many thanks for that.i have had a quote for £500.00 so i suppose it sounds reasonable,if you say it quickly!!he specialises in clutch and cambelt replacements,so hopefully he knows his job.no replys regarding reliable garages so its trial and error.fingersX

I seem to recall that one is around 4hrs and the other 3hrs, plus parts. Can't recall which takes longer. Cambelt kit is around £80, I would doubt you could get the clutch parts for less than £150, so he isn't expensive.

Look to get the aux belt and possibly water pump done at the same time.

The first post does mention the Canterbury area, so I would assume that's what the location is. ;)

I had had a gearbox and cambelt change done in less time than would be quoted for the job individually, so £500 doesn't sound unreasonable. Make sure that they're including the cost of the parts in that, and before you agree to the work, check that they have changed cambelts on the 1.7 engine before, as it can be tricky to reset the timing if you don't know how. As has been mentioned, worth getting the auxilliary belt changed as that needs to be removed to get to the cambelt, and the water pump too at the same time, as they have been known to leak afterwards.

Don't try and re-use the rocker cover gasget either.... pain in the arse if it leaks into the plugs area causing a whole new of problems..lol

Sounds reasonable'ish...providing your not getting a cheap motorfactor clutch.... after saying that, nothing wrong at all in getting the bits there, just make sure you get the right stuff... ideally LUK (who make them for ford)... Fords price just for the Release bearing is around £100, as they don't sell a '3-part' kit... slightly rediculous!...

Regards

hi, thankyou all so much for your very prudent advice,i shall certainly take it,but probably let the husband relay the said advice to the mechanic,,,,dont think it would be terribly welcome from a female somehow!!I am in the canterbury area, but would be willing to travel to a recommended garage,,,cant say i,v had much luck with them,so far,and the main dealerships prices are exorbitant!!!! book to have the work done for next week,so will report back when sorted!!!thankyou all again for taking an interest,,,hugs xxxxxx
