Hi,

Looking at two front tyres, and a discs/pads set for my Puma.. Now I know they say "buy cheap, buy twice", but I think I've found some reasonably good deals here.. If anyone knows better or has any advice I'd be grateful -

Tyres-

http://www.camskill.co.uk/products.php?show=111610" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

So those are Uniroyal RainSport 3's - two delivered for £79. Fitting both probably around £20? So £100 for two new front tyres? Looks like the RainSport 3's are pretty well reviewed, better than Toyo T1R's, and a capable summer tyre with excellent wet capability.

And the pads/discs -

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/FORD-PUMA-1-7-16V-1-4-16V-97-01-Front-Brake-Kit-Discs-Pads-Eicher-/400587228103?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&fits=Model%3APuma&hash=item5d44dc03c7" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

A set of Eicher pads and discs for £30 delivered. Again, probably an hours labour for a garage? So another £30-40 on top? So £70 for a new set of front discs and pads? Seems a good price to me. I know Eicher aren't a performance brand - far from it - but a decent enough brand?

That comes to approx £170 for tyres, pads and discs?

Any thoughts?

Thanks!

Thanks for your help and quick reply..

Do you have any thoughts on the pads/discs? I'm not a massive fan of DIY - I have limited tools, though I have done oil changes and various filters on other cars.

Pagid are excellent. If you have 240mm discs on your car they are cheap enough on http://www.eurocarparts.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; they have a 31% discount offer on at the moment.
I wouldn't bother with eicher or any of the other budget stuff. Its price point is there for a reason.

As for fitting its a piece of cake. Plenty of how to available. Wheel off, lever pads back a little. undo 2 x slider bolts (7mm hex key) pull away caliper. Remove pads.
Undo two caliper bracket bolts, remove bracket, remove disc retaining screw - may need a good wack, belting the old disc about helps too.
Remove old disc, clean hub and bracket of rust and dust.
Fit new disc and retaining screw.
Refit cleaned bracket.
Fit non piston side pad. Good idea to put a small smear of copper grease where the pad sits in bracket.
Clean up caliper, push piston back with a g clamp or similar. Be careful your master cylinder hasn't been overfilled - its a good idea to loosen the cap and put some rags round to catch any fluid that gets pushed back.
Fit new pad to caliper.
Clean slider pins and put a smear of copper grease on pin.
Refit caliper to bracket and secure with slider pins.
Check pins and bracket bolts are tight.
Refit road wheel.
Pump brake pedal to push pads onto disc.
Repeat for other side.

Drive steady for first 100 or so miles.

The pagid discs come with an anti corrosion coating and don't need degreasing. So any reference to degreasing you find on the net should be ignored if you choose pagid products.

Look to be a brilliant price on eBay - can you check compatability for me for a 1999 1.7 Puma?

I got the larger version of these for our Thunder - work perfectly well:

The change to 260mm was 2000 so you should be OK with those 240mm discs and pads.

The only thing that puts me off The ones you linked to on eBay is the sellers feedback. The brief look I took showed negative feed back for wrong parts, late or non exsitant delivery.

I tend to prefer paying more from a reputable seller such as http://www.eurocarparts.co.uk" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; or http://www.carparts4less.co.uk" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; to ensure I get the bits I want on time.

Obviously lots of people buy from that seller and don't have the same cautious approach I take.

In case somebody's changed the discs and calipers at sometime before your ownership it's worth taking off a front wheel to measure the diameter of the discs so you order the right ones.
Barry

I'd go with that.

Mine should be 260mm and is now sporting the 280mm ST kit.

I would of course tell the new owner if I ever sold it, but many wouldn't think to.

What work is involved with the upgrade from 240mm to 260mm/280mm discs and pads?

If I'm swapping over the discs and pads, I'm guessing the only other change is the caliper?

I went from 260 - 280 I swapped out the calipers are carriers for the ST 150 kit.

The brake hoses are the same fitting so its just a case of bleeding the new calipers.
I did it one side at a time and it bled fine.

Not sure about 240 - 260. Sometimes you can get away with only swapping the caliper carrier meaning no need to open up the brake system and consequently having to bleed it.

If you are anywhere near northants I have the complete 260mm calipers and some ok discs that are free to a good home.

Nowhere near you, but would gladly pay courier fees should I decide to go for the 260mm upgrade?

I've had a quick Google, and it looks like the Fiesta ST 280mm calipers fetch quite a bit of money, so I can either spend a bit of money on upgrading to 260mm, or just go ahead with the Pagid discs and pads.

I'll weigh the calipers and discs and give you a price for parcelforce or similar.
The discs are OK. So you would be in for the postage and new pads.

The ST calipers fetch between £75-100 and you will need to factor in the cost of discs and pads as well. They are a lot dearer than the 240/260 stuff.

I'll get back to you with a price on Monday. Its the first chance I will have to get a postage cost for you.

That's all fine with me, your assistance is much appreciated. :-D

Are the discs Ford originals?

Would these pads fit the calipers that I'm hoping to fit?

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/FORD-FIESTA-Mk4-FORD-KA-WITH-ABS-2000-2002-FORD-PUMA-FRONT-BRAKE-PADS-/380872178711?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item58adc03c17" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Says Puma 2000-2002? Ferodo a pretty decent standard of pads at what looks like a good price?

Fairlight - give me a shout when you've had change to price up the discs and pads. Can you also take a look at the eBay link above for the ferodo pads to see if they're compatible with the calipers and discs?

Jp88.

Didn't get a chance to get to the post office yesterday. Work had other ideas....

I had a good look in the garage and it would appear I have chucked the discs :-( I changed my brakes last February. I was sure I had kept the discs but I can't find them anywhere.

I have cleaned up the calipers with a rotary wire brush. They are all good and ready to fit. When I can figure out how to post a pic I will put one up for you to look at.
Give us an hour or two and I will look at discs and pads on eBay for you.
Parcelforce want £16.40 for 48 hour service. The package weighs 7.928 Kg.

I will also look at the other courier service mentioned earlier in the post.

Cheers.

Gaz.

That gaz, you can use bb11 1nq as the postcode. I'll have a good look later at the price of 260mm discs and pads for the bigger calipers and see what sort of costs are involved... Looking at the 240mm pads and discs at £30.. Hard to justify probably twice that for 260mm calipers, pads and discs
