I have tried and searched all the threads regarding this topic, but didn't find any definitive answer. I got the LSD so obviously the gearbox will go apart. When it will be out of the car, it maks no sense to put in the old clutch. So, here is my dilemma. I am in planning stage of turbocharging the puma (low boost conversion, looking to 160-170 HP max) so am looking for a better (i.e. stronger) clutch.
Option 1: focus Mk1 1.8 clutch. It is 220 mm and is stronger then original. I read it is very soft to operate and that puts some people off. I am not after any club racing, so don't mind the pedal getting softer. Is this something to recommmend, powerhandling vise?
Option 2: fiesta St150 clutch. The catalogues list it as 220 mm as well; is there any difference between 1 and 2?

I understand for either of these options I would need to retain the puma thrust bearing? ( I hope it is the right combination of words; it is exact translation how we call it).
So, I would need either focus 1.8 friction plate and the basket, or fiesta ST150 friction plate and the basket AND puma thrust bearing?

Is there anything else?

Thanks in advance, as always, any info is appreciated

Not shure abot what the difference is, but they may werry wel be identical, as they use the same gearbox.

I have a st 150 clutch, and i'm werry happy whit it :)

Not shure what you men by basket, but i used a fiesta st 150 clutch, amd presure plate, whit the standard puma flywheel, and clutch slave cylinder.

I belive there is a guide somwhere, but it's a streight bolt on thing. Only thing is there has been an Upgrade done to the slave sylinder, and you may have to swap out the hydraulic line, no big deal :) not shure how to tel,the one from the other, but i belive the New one has a plastic blead nipple, and the old is mettal.

If there is wear on the flywheel, you'll need to have it re-faced to remove the ridge, otherwise you won't get full-face contact with the bigger surface area of the clutch friction material.

Clutch Slave Cylinder Bleed Nipple (Old Style), Metal, Screws/Unscrews like a normal bolt.

Clutch Slave Cylinder Bleed Nipple (New Style), "Plastic", only turns through a fixed 90 or 180 degree - can't remember which.

Yeap, I calculated it already in, along with having the flywheel balanced while it is out….

Thanks for the help, guys, much appretiated!

So, to conclude this thread: you would recommend the fiesta ST150 route, not the Mk1 focus 1.8?

I have had the focus clutch in mine now for nearly 2 years and It's still going strong. Highly recomended :)

Hmmm, back to square one. I guess I'll let the wallet decide. Will check to see which is the cheaper option since, apparently, both clutches are OK to be fitted :)

Just to let every1 know: I got quotes for both clutch sets.
Apparently, focus outscores ST150 at the rate od 2,43 to 1. Yes, ST150 is 2,43 TIMES more expensive than the focus 1.8i clutch set :?
What is the ratio in UK?
I get (converted to GBP) LUK set for focus for 88,30 GBP.
FIesta ST150 set (by Sachs) is 280 GBP, Ford original is 215 GBP.
Thrust bearing is more or less the same for LUK and Sachs 65 GBP.
How much would that be in UK?

Thanks in advance,

Jeez, that is virtually for free if I compare the parts prices here. The ST150 set would be €623,- and the Focus one €397,-. Especially the Focus one is an amazing difference . And that's for 'brandless' parts.. Definately means I will source my parts abroad again.

Hey,

Did you end up fitting the ST 150 or the Focus clutch?

I have to replace the clutch, I intend to fit the ST one.

BTW how was it with the LSD? If I found a cheaper quote I would fit the Quaife.

Nope, I usee a regular puma one. Got the factory refurbished set, in it was brand new LUK thrust bearing, brand new sach clutch and a nameless pressure plate.
The LSD has to much bite, TBH. I sent it to Bara motorsport for service (it is a escort RS turbo LSD unit) and they rerated it at 120 Nm. The one in FRP is rated at 35 Nm. The 120 Nm setting is normally used for tarmac rallies. With hindsight, for a daily anything over 60 Nm is over the top.

I oversaw the replies. Thanks. I already bought the ST 150 clutch (along with the CSC slave for a Puma). I'll cross fingers and hope it is ok. I couldn't find anyone commenting on the actual ST150 clutch experience.

Thanks so much for the info regarding LSD. People rave about Quaife but perhaps Escort RS was a bit too much. I am still at 125 bhp and barely need it. I will see for comments on Quaife for the standard hp-output.

(BTW I rather have struggled a bit with tyres. I have 205/45R16's on Asymmetric 2 (Goodyear) at the front, really grippy and left old Goodyears at the back, and the other day the back simply snapped violently. I love the progressive oversteer I used to get on low friction tyres, but with the gripppy front ones, the whole handling has massively changed)

Sorry, I don't quite understand. I tried but it is difficult to find new flywheels. So I have to have the surface machined, be made plain for it to fit? S***, perhaps I should have ordered a regular clutch. :-(
