My post might be too late to help you, not sure when you took/are taking your test but have you tried Adrian Flux? One of the groups they specialise in is young drivers and Dal has negotiated up to 15% discount for club members. (see thread at top of insurance main page)

After a few years of having your Mum or another adult as the main driver and you as named, you should be able to switch round with not much difference in price. Pumatt's right - my son's insurance has reduced by adding me as a driver and he passed his test 6 years ago and has 5 years NCD!

The V5 doc is in his name, although Swiftcover (who we've gone with) would have insured him with me named on the V5. (It's still MY Puma though!) As Martin said though the majority of insurers want the V5 in your name when you are the insurance policyholder.

I wouldn't be put off using them because of their history, you'll always be covered.

I am not convinced that that is a prediction that has any validity at all.

If an insurance company in administration can't re-establish itelf as trading viably then it goes out of business. If you are insured with them on that day, your policy is worthless.

At the time of it all happening a bulletin was released stating all current policies are still valid and policy holders need not worry.
Since then, the company has made internal changes and are back operating as normal, hence my lack of worry. :)

If for any reason the company encounters problems again (touch wood), the FSA would rinse them invaliditing any policies.

I got insured with Quinn (through Compare the Market) No haggling, No pleading with them and they quoted me the following (which i bought Last Xmas)

Me (Main driver & registered owner & keeper)
My parents (Named drivers)

Thats getting a standard quote with windscreen & breakdown cover which cost £2400
I then told them about my Pass Plus which they said would be good for a 10% discount

Therefore in total it was a ~£2000 insurance premium on a 1.7i Millennium model

Insurance prices have gone up since though so I've no idea if that will still be the case come renewal.

I know several people that have been screwed by Quinn - Insuring their cars before they pass, and the price nearly doubling when they actually get a licence.

As for your £2,000 quote, it's realistic - I'm a 19 yr old boy, no NCB, 0 claims and I've had my licence nearly 2 years, and I'm paying £2,065 with me as the main driver and both my parents as named drivers. Your quote is fairly good considering your age, but unless you aren't in college, it will be hard to afford - £2,000 works out at about £170 per month.

cant believe price of insurance now when i was 17 way back when mine was £600 i think if you go with quinn click through quidco and get £28 cash back

I'm just going to mention this, without meaning to be a scaremonger!

Traffic Police are now getting training around insurance. One of the topics that are covered is the fact that a vast majority of drivers in their first two years are 'named drivers' on their parents policies. The bone of contention with the insurance companies is that named drivers were initially introduced so that family members/partners could drive the vehicle OCCASIONALLY. The MAIN driver, should be the policy holder. The traffic boys are getting wise to this with the new training, and it's filtering down onto normal response car levels.

Advice; if stopped and questioned by an officer, do not disclose that you drive the car more than the policy holder, it's not worth the risk of being the test case of a judicial enquiry which gets rid of the grey area of the legislation! If you don't tell them, its up to them to prove that you are in fact the main driver, and are therefore either driving without insurance or possibly even committing fraud by false representation.

It's very unlikely that this would happen of course if you wore a smile and co-operated with anyone who stopped you, but I know all too well how much the traffic boys love a good court case!

My daughter just bought a Puma 1.4 as her first car.

She's 19 (was still just 18 when she bought it) and we paid £975 Fully Comp (£500 excess) with Diamond. She had only had her licence about a month when she bought it. Admiral were about £50 MORE in our case.

She's the main driver and I and my wife are on there as named drivers, which helped a lot.

Not too terrible I didn't think (and I paid for the first year!) - Hopefully she will not make any claims and be able to afford next year's herself!

Hello,

I am a 17 year old girl and when I pass my test I would like to get a Puma, I love them! My mum also really likes them so we are interested in sharing the car. My mum would drive the car to and from work during the week, I would just use the car at weekends.

We would get a 1.4, but would I actually get insured or would the insurance just be ridiculous? I have got a few quotes, and the cheapest was from Quinn. My test is a few months away still, is the insurance likely to increase at all?

Do you know anyone who had a puma as a first car? Sorry, lots of questions!

Many thanks :)

youll get insured fine on a Puma, I bought my puma as my first car as i was learning to drive, Provisional insurance was with a company called 'Collingwood' who specialise in provisional insurance, it cost me just under £600 a year, but you pay monthly and can cancel whenever you like with no fee's.

when i passed my test, i insured my car with Elephant, and it cost me £1600 for the year, which i payed out in full (cheaper that way), my renenwal is due next month and with the same company its come in at roughly £1100!

thats all on my own insurance, in my name, fully comp (some reason it was cheaper to be fully comp) i have my mum (9 points on her liscense) and my mums friend both as named drivers, that dropped it by a good few hundred quid :)

has been worth every penny i spent! couldnt imagine a much more perfect first car :)

My 1.7 'Black' is my first car, and my first insurance on my own too, and I had some insane quotes, €1890 being the worst. Quite a few, Tesco included, refused to quote me at all.
I had 3-and-a-bit (you only get credit for whole years!) years Named Driver experience on the mother and Fiancé's cars, and Financé is named on my own policy (and I on hers) which brought down the quote a lot. I ended up going with AA, €606 fully comp with an excess of €500 (I think). That said, I'm 32, M.

I emailed AA yesterday to see how they'd feel about a K&N cone filter, haven't heard back; don't really want to have to go in the 'modified cars' bracket, I love the noise, but it's hardly a supercharger.
