I've been driving around an area with some serious speed bumps & was getting a 'knocking' noise from the rear end 
I emptied the boot of anything that could rattle/move, but the noise persisted
I was convinced this would end up a garage job... until I I came out the local corner shop & realised that the rear wheel tray looked a little low! I stripped out the carpets to find that my whole spare wheel & tray were loose (really loose!)... not far from just dumping the spare on the road! Anyway, tightened it all up... and the knocking noise has disappeared
