hi guys, was wandering if anyone can advise if they have refurb rear axle on there cars and other parts underneath, i.e drive shaft etc ?
if so what cause off action did you take, and how did you treat and paint ?

I've done my rear axel, got it sandblasted, then primed, then decided to put mastic 131, from rust busters, then painted it the colour of the car, then put heavy duty laquier on top for good measure. My rule is, if it comes of the car, then it'll be cleaned, replaced if needed, then painted. There's a few threads on here about this.

I would have liked to have sandblasted parts but I went at bits with a wire brush and painted with hammerite.

I would have liked to have everything sand blasted and powder coated but need to be sensible with costs and Pumas are a long way from being say classic £30k MK1 escorts.

As above mine was done off car (bought a spare axle to reduce down time) with loads of elbow grease wire brushes and wire brushes on a drill etc a sander would have been great but I didn't have one.

Wash and degrease and get all the loose rust off then I treated with Halford green rust removing gel and then washed that off at which point much of the rust has turned black. Then I did all that a further two times.

Followed by three coats of Halfords rust preventing primer.

Followed by three or four coats of smooth black hammerite. Hammerite smooth seems to have lots of lacquer in it but little actual pigment so lots of coats are needed.

That particular axle spent three years on my previous car which got Shallomed out of existence and then went on my current Puma where its lived for three more years. I don't do much mileage but the only place where the paint has chipped is where I have jacked up the car on the axle. The underside rear including behind my petrol tank has also been done exactly the same way and is flawless and has not chipped or rusted through in over two years. My petrol petrol tank has just been replaced with a new one and has been done exactly the same in a fetching shade of hammerite red.

My rule is that the only time anyone will see the underneath of your car is when it has just run them over.

So...cars, like Pumas, get Vactan - a water based rust killer and primer, followed by Dinitrol 4941 and think themselves lucky. Mind you, it does work and the stuff doesn't rust afterwards.
